Tropical Cyclone Alfred has claimed its first event casualties, with the Beenleigh Show and other events cancelled due to safety concerns.
The severe weather system continues to impact plans across the region as organisers prioritise public safety.
The Beenleigh Show Society announced the cancellation with “great disappointment,” confirming that refunds for entries and trade stalls would be issued in due course.
“Thank you to all who have been involved in our preparation,” a statement said.
“Refunds for entries and trade stalls will be issued in due course.”
The cancellation means crowds will miss out on a Beenleigh tradition that was set to celebrate its 145th year on 8 March.
The annual event promised to bring back all the classics, from Dagwood dogs and fairy floss to thrilling rides, live performances, and sideshow alley.
Among the major drawcards this year was the Aussie FMX team, scheduled to perform aerial stunts, including an Australian-first trick.
Their highly anticipated “Riders of the Night” finale, featuring stunt riders illuminated by LED lights in total darkness, was expected to be a showstopper.
The event also had a packed competition schedule, with contests in spinning and weaving, bush poetry, old collectables, and the dog show.
The cyclone has also affected other major events.
The Eraserheads: Ang Huling El Bimbo 2025 World Tour, scheduled for 9 March at Kingston Butter Factory, has been cancelled.
The concert marked the legendary Filipino rock band’s first-ever tour in Australia.
Meanwhile, the Logan Chamber of Commerce’s event “Building A Resilient Business: Insights From David Koch,” originally scheduled for this Thursday, has been postponed to 3 April.
