Cyclone Watch Tuesday: High wind gusts, flooding now likely

Logan residents are now being told to prepare for heavy and intense rainfall from tomorrow, with cyclonic conditions possible Thursday and Friday.

Latest weather bureau monitoring of tropical cyclone Alfred say the intensity of the storm will probably fluctuate between a category 1 and category 2 over the next couple of days.

However, they predict it will hit the southeast Queensland coast at Category 2 strength late Thursday or early Friday morning.

Despite moving slowly southeast at just 6km/hr and now sitting more than 500km off the coast, bureau analysts say it will likely turn west and make its way to the coast over the next 2-3 days.

Weather warnings now say flooding is likely later this week.

“Isolated flooding may develop from overnight Wednesday, with more widespread flooding likely from overnight Thursday into Friday, continuing into early next week,” reports said.

The heaviest rainfall will depend on where the cyclone goes.

But if the eye of the cyclone crosses the coast anywhere from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Logan residents can expect winds up to 120km/hour.

Current tracking says it is more likely to hit between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, however that means more rainfall is likely to the south of the cyclone.

People are being told to clean up debris from their yards today, ahead of the rain.

Logan City Council issued a statement Monday afternoon, pointing to a webpage that includes information on how to best prepare for the cyclone.

It says:
