Planning is currently underway on a proposed development that would see 500 homes, both market price and cheaper, be built at Meadowbrook.
The owner of the University Drive block, Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), is in the process of determining how much road, drainage, water, sewerage and power infrastructure will be needed to support development.
In October last year, the federal government promised $40 million to fund this infrastructure.
The homes will be built on 35 University Drive, an unused piece of land next to Griffith University.
According to EDQ, the state government identified the property for residential development.
EDQ hopes to use the block to deliver a range of housing options to locals “in response to the housing challenges facing south-east Queensland”.
Once the development application is approved, EDQ predicts work will begin in mid-2025.
According to Rankin MP and treasurer Jim Chalmers, the federal government’s infrastructure funding will fast track site approvals from 12 months to 12 weeks.
“… so families in our growing community can get into a home much sooner,” he said in October.
“The wonderful thing about this part of south-east Queensland – we’ve got a university there, a hospital and a TAFE there, a retail centre there, two motorways, a train station – and this is all about making sure that we build more homes for Australians where the jobs and essential services are.”
EDQ said it was also assessing the traffic impact the development would have on the local road network, claiming parking for residents would be provided throughout the development.
The proposed development is part of EDQ’s plan to unlock under-utilised Government owned land and fast track the provision of diverse housing options, including affordable housing, for Queenslanders.
