POLICE say changing neighbourhoods are seeing increases in multi-generational households with multiple family and group members which have occurred as a result of cost-of-living pressures, housing affordability issues and changing job availability and current working conditions.
“Ageing parents may find themselves involved in daily challenges of having adult children living at home longer and grandparents may perform a greater role in child minding duties and other domestic chores,” they said.
This means multi-residential and high density living puts security at risk – parking garages, storage compounds and communal amenities and facilities.
It can also impact knowing your neighbours.
“Maintaining a good routine can safeguard residents to help prevent crime while remaining alert to anything out of the ordinary in or around your home and the local community,” a statement from police said.
“Security is essential in high-rise buildings, apartments, unit blocks, over 50s and retirement living communities to deter theft and opportunistic break-ins as a result of easy access or entry, as well as the attractive unsecured valuables.
“It is important be aware and know what to do in the event of an emergency.”
Police provided the following safety tips:
- Saving relevant phone numbers in your mobile phone
- Knowing evacuation and safety procedures
- Ensuring communal doors and windows are closed and locked or secured
- Make sure entries and exits are completely closed
- Avoid lending your keys to anyone
- Securing belongings and valuables in a locked storage area
- Removing or concealing valuables and garage remotes left in vehicles
- When your car is unattended, fully close all windows, lock all doors and the boot, secure registration plates with anti-theft screws (safe pl8 screws are available free to Logan residents via this link)
