Kickflips and community dreams

Skateboarding in Logan is about to kick up a notch, all thanks to some supercharged locals.

A petition circulated around Kingston is calling on Logan City Council to build a skatepark in the area, with 60 signatures already.

In September, local councillor Teresa Lane invited the community to contribute to possible plans for a park.

“We had two options… the first was a one-item skate area, and the second one was a few extra things that kids can have fun on,” she said.

“The greatest thing that came out of it was that the residents really came down in force and had their say on a number of options that I’ve put forward for locations for a skate park in Kingston.”

Cr Lane said residents’ voices “hold weight”.

“The number of residents that were there included business operators, people from the skateboarding industry, and there was a real groundswell,” she said.

Community consultation to determine a specific location – narrowed down to either Bega Park or Gould Adams Park – will begin in November.

To the west, in Yarrabilba, other council plans to install a skate park at McKinnon Park have received a financial pledge from state MP Linus Power.

Current plans would see the 950sqm park delivered in two stages and would include a 290sqm section for children and learner riders.

Mr Power, the Member for Logan, has promised $300,000 for the project.

Local councillor Nathan St Ledger said this was “the first step to getting a skate park in Yarrabilba”.

“I’ve been listening to the community, and we’ve worked with the team to get a concept design done,” he said.

Mr Power said plans for the park, including a location, were informed by local residents.

He said both he and Cr St Ledger would love to see an Olympic skateboarder come from Yarrabilba in the future.

“Local Schools can use the facility as part of their school sports with students learning skills, fitness and safety through school sports just as Olympic Gold Medallist Arisa Trew honed her skills on the Gold Coast,” Mr Power said.

“Getting Logan families active and healthy through sport has been our focus.”
