Public hearing for flood affected

The flooding we experienced in early 2022, impacted residents tremendously across Logan.

In response to the flooding events which occurred across Queensland and New South Wales, Federal Parliament’s House Committee on Economics established the inquiry into insurers’ responses to 2022 major floods claims, of which I am a member.

We have so far heard from a number of different regulators, insurance companies and consumer advocacy, and legal rights groups, to understand how they have managed claims and how these processes can be improved in the future.

The committee will be coming to Beenleigh to hear directly from Logan residents on their experiences with insurers following the floods.

Details for the public hearing for local councils, businesses, community organisations and community members are:

Date: 10 April 2024
Time: 9am (tbc)
Location: Beenleigh Events Centre – Kent St, Beenleigh QLD 4207

We also want you to be part of the committee’s discussion.

Expressions of interest are being sought from residents to each give a three-to-four-minute public statement about their experience with their insurers.

The Committee would like to hear about any of the following issues:

  • the experiences of policyholders before, during and after making claims
  • timeframes for resolving claims
  • obstacles to resolving claims
  • insurers’ communication with policyholders
  • accessibility and affordability of hydrology reports and other expert assessments
  • affordability of insurance premiums
  • claimants’ experiences of insurers’ dispute resolution processes.

People interested in appearing should email a one or two sentence summary of their experience to the Committee secretariat at floodinsurance.reps@aph.gov.au

They should write “Public Hearing” and the hearing location of Logan in the subject line and include full name(s) for each person who wants to participate, as well as a contact number and email address.

Written submissions can also be uploaded online by visiting https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/OnlineSubmission or by email to floodinsurance.reps@aph.gov.au until 31 July 2024.

Programs for the hearings will be posted on the inquiry website closer to the time.

A live audio stream of the hearings will be available on the Australian Parliament House website.
