WITH voting now open for the local government elections, it’s time for people to look at what’s important to them in their local area and to ensure the principles of their preferred candidate are aligned.
Five former councillors are being “re-elected” unopposed, which means many voters won’t be given that opportunity.
And with so much apathy surrounding local government elections, we’re likely to see a high number of people not bothering to join the queue on ballot day.
If this is the case, it will be a massive shame. All people are required to vote for mayor, so there’s no excuse to miss the poll.
Many may recognise a name at the booth and vote purely on that notion. Most won’t do their homework, won’t know whether one would-be mayor has policies or views on local matters, and will consider the whole process a waste of their weekend time.
But this local election remains important.
Some candidates are keen to stir up “dirty” background on their opponents. Others are looking to be proactive for our city.
This newspaper refuses to report on gutter politics, preferring to ask candidates how they feel about issues that are of true relevance to the city.
Stay tuned for a special local election edition next week (March 12 edition of MyCity Logan).
