Speeding giants truck turmoil

Speeding trucks are said to be wreaking havoc on Schmidt Road in Eagleby as community concerns for safety build.

A new development at Eagleby has required upgrades to Eagleby Road to support heavy vehicle movements.

Development-related trucks have been redirected through Schmidt Road, which is narrower and one-way at some parts.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the impacts the trucks might have on Schmidt Road, claiming it is “not suitable for heavy transport” with reports many of the trucks are speeding.

Logan City Council didn’t say whether Schmidt Road could handle such use when asked by MyCity Logan, but a spokesperson confirmed the developer’s contractor would pay for any damage.

“The developer’s contractor has completed comprehensive conditions report of Eagleby Road and Schmidt Road and is solely responsible for rectifying any road damage prior to completing development works,” the spokesperson said.

“The developer’s contractor is undertaking street sweeping and is regularly monitoring conditions to ensure any damage is repaired immediately. ”

The spokesperson said trucks would no longer use Schmidt Road once the Eagleby Road upgrades were complete.

“The road upgrade is slated for completion in five weeks, weather permitting,” she said,

“Initial works include necessary improvements to a short section of Eagleby Road to ensure safe vehicle access to the development site.”

She said a road closure permit was in place, and access along the road verge would be “maintained at all times for emergency vehicles and in the event of flooding on Schmidt Road”.

The spokesperson advised residents who notice unsafe driving to record the vehicle’s details and report it to police.
