City’s mowers in overtime to play catch-up

Three extra contractors and a dozen volunteers have joined the city’s mowing crews amid community concern over overgrown grass.

For weeks locals have complained about unmown nature strips and parks throughout Logan, which council said were untouchable due to boggy conditions.

Now, three additional mowing contractors have been employed and 12 council staff members have volunteered to help mowing crews catch up with the backlog of jobs.

Two of council’s pest and plant control officers, Rebecca Martin and Beni Ntamwenge, volunteered to help restore local parks, footpaths and road reserves.

“We just wanted to do our bit to help the community,” they said.

Council said its mowing teams were working overtime and on weekends.

“It is hoped that drier weather forecast for the coming days will allow crews to get the upper hand in this mammoth mowing task,” a council statement read.

A combination of rain, humidity and sunshine in recent weeks have been blamed for the rapid grass growth.
