Even when times are tough, there is still a lot to celebrate about being Australian.
Our local communities know that better than most.
Off the back of a challenging start to 2024, our city will come together for the City of Logan’s annual Australia Day celebrations on Friday.
As part of the event, our city will welcome around 180 residents who will become Australian citizens.
In 2023, the City of Logan welcomed more than 1500 residents as citizens at local ceremonies.
The Australia Day citizenship ceremony is always one of our biggest, and it’s also the last one I will preside over before my retirement.
It’s been an honour to be part of these special moments over the years and these are the memories I will remember fondly in years to come.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship ceremonies.
Since the first ceremony in 1949, more than 6 million people from more than 200 nations across the globe have been granted Australian citizenship.
Our Australia Day event will also recognise some of the remarkable people who have made significant contributions to our city with our 2024 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards.
As Mayor, it is always an honour to recognise the individuals who have shown an inspirational dedication and commitment to their community.
The challenging and confronting weather events our city has faced in the past few weeks has only emphasised the importance of our local heroes – the residents who go above and beyond time and time again.
It has shown us, once again, that our city is bursting with extraordinary people who work tirelessly to service their neighbourhoods.
Last year, Berrinba resident Rachel Simpkin-Bale was recognised as our Citizen of the Year for her advocacy against domestic violence over the past 30 years, while Amelia Ayris was our Young Citizen of the Year for her volunteer work in child safety.
This Friday we will celebrate the deserving 2024 nominees and their outstanding contributions to our city, and I am looking forward to congratulating our winners.
