Quieter day, but same meaning

It will be a quieter than usual Australia Day, with fewer events around the city.

Lifting of restrictions allow people to eat in restaurants, albeit socially distanced, dance in clubs and barbecue with friends and family in the park.

Logan City Council will be going ahead with its ceremony and citizenship event at the Logan Entertainment Centre today (Tuesday).

They will also be naming winners of the Australia Day awards.

Mayor Darren Power said the event would be Covid-safe.

“After a challenging year for our City and our country, the ceremony will serve as an important reminder of how much we have to be thankful for in Logan,” Cr Power said.

“This year’s Australia Day event is my first as Mayor and I am looking forward to the privilege of being the one to welcome almost 150 new Australian citizens to the City of Logan.

“I have no doubt they, and their families, will contribute richly to the future of our City, which is already home to those from 217 different cultures.

“It will also be my honour this year to formally congratulate those who continue to go above and beyond for our local communities.

“The award of Citizen of the Year is a high honour and this year’s Logan recipient, who will be officially announced on Tuesday, is deserving indeed.”

Most clubs will have celebrations of their own, but official events are few and far between this year.

There will be a cycling event from Jimboomba Community Hall where Rotary will be celebrating 100 years in Australia.

Two bike rides will leave from the hall, one 34km starting at 5am along with a sausage sizzle breakfast and salad lunch.

There will be a live Zoom into hall of combined Australia Day Council and Rotary Australia event from Melbourne at 11.30am.

On Thursday, Logan firefighters will be presented with awards at a special ceremony for the region.
