Emotional award celebrates humanity at hospital

A graduate midwife’s compassion for new mums and babies at Logan Hospital has been acknowledged with an emotional award.

Hannah Su was given the Janelle Pettit award, now in its third year.

Nurse and midwife Janelle Pettit was a much-loved member of Logan Hospital’s maternity team who sadly passed away in 2018.

Midwifery Unit manager Margaret Wendt said the award is presented to the graduate midwife who most represented Janelle’s passion for new mums, their babies and their families, as voted by maternity and neonatal staff.

“Hannah truly embraces all of the spirit Janelle showed; she’s always smiling and she is kind and caring to all patients,” Ms Wendt said.

“We have an incredible team at Logan Maternity who are genuinely invested in growing our next generation of nurses and midwives, and it’s a privilege to see the amazing care that Hannah and all of our graduate nurses are providing to Logan families,” she said.

Hospital staff described Hannah as an “amazing midwife” with an “exemplary” attitude towards women, who is also a “joy to work with”.

Ms Su was surprised and delighted to have received the award, saying she was nervous when she started as a graduate but the award has given her validation that she is on the right path.

“There are so many good nurses and midwives here, so this is a big deal for me,” Ms Su said.

“I love Logan Hospital – the staff are so lovely. I love working with mums and families who need support and I love helping people. I also enjoy working with the multicultural community and people from all walks of life.”

Joining in the awards ceremony, Graham Pettit said the Logan Hospital team was a family for Janelle and while she would be embarrassed by the attention, the award in her name was heartening.

“This is a wonderful legacy to Janelle and her attitude to midwifery, nursing and people in general,” Mr Pettit said.
