A bus load of students have miraculously escaped after being hit by a truck on the M1 last week.
Ten students were hospitalised after the freak accident, but all have been sent home.
An Education Department spokesperson is praising the actions of staff and witnesses who stepped in to help and support those involved.
Ten Calamvale Community College students and a truck driver were taken to hospital after the Logan City bus was hit while stopped near the Beenleigh exit on the M1 southbound.
The high school students, aged between 14 and 15, were headed to Gold Coast theme park Wet’n’Wild to celebrate the end of the school year.
By the next day, almost all the students and the truck driver had been discharged from hospital.
It is understood that one teenager, who suffered leg and head injuries, required surgery at Queensland Children’s Hospital.
A hospital spokesperson has confirmed the student is no longer admitted at the hospital.
A spokesperson from the Department of Education commended the “selfless actions of the witnesses and school staff who offered immediate assistance and support to those involved” in the accident.
“The majority of students and staff treated have been released from hospital and are safe and well in the care of their families,” the spokesperson said.
“The school continues to provide updates and support to the students that were on the bus and their families, and to the greater school community.”
Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Scott Harris said 60 people, including 55 students, were assessed by paramedics at the scene.
He said the injuries were “fairly moderate”, including “some fractures and abrasions”.
Seven ambulances attended the scene.
Eight students were taken to Logan Hospital with minor injuries.
Two others, including a student with facial injuries and the truck driver, were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.
It is unknown whether the student has been discharged.
The teenager with leg and head injuries was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Less than an hour after the crash, Calamvale Community College sent parents a text informing them of the accident.
Some students were reportedly picked up by their parents at the scene of the crash, while the others were picked up by a different bus and returned to school.
There were eight other buses full of students heading to the theme park – they were all turned around.
Police are investigating the crash, and are yet to reveal why the bus was stopped on the M1 or why the crash occurred.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash or any dashcam in the area to assist their investigation.
