Logan City council has launched a taskforce that uses surveillance cameras to locate and remove burnt out and dumped cars, discarded shopping trolleys, and unauthorised signs.
The Rapid Response Taskforce will use the city’s camera network to monitor local streets and parks to address a range of nuisance-related issues.
Council said this will keep Logan neighbourhoods “cleaner and safer”.
“This is believed to be the first collaborative initiative of its kind in Southeast Queensland, using safety cameras to address amenity issues,” a council statement said.
Council’s citywide Safety Camera Program features more than 1400 cameras.
Local councillor and lifestyle chair Tony Hall said the taskforce was funded for the next three years.
“This initiative comes at no additional cost to ratepayers through the use of the existing camera network and we look forward to seeing it improve the detection and resolution of amenity-related issues throughout the city,” Cr Hall said.
“Our camera operators are continually monitoring different areas of the city, and this is an ideal way to identify locations which the taskforce needs to address.”
Cr Jon Raven revealed results of a recent blitz across every street in Marsden, Crestmead, Waterford West and Berrinba:
- 386 streets patrolled
- 33 proactive inspections – identifying 77,400L of waste
- 29 offences identified with 62,000L of waste removed within 24 hrs
“One offender tried to use fake plates to evade our city-wide CCTV network,” Cr Raven said.
“The Taskforce got him in the end though and issued over $3000 of fines.”
A campaign council hopes will “boost pride” and “generate behavioural change” in Logan will accompany the taskforce, encouraging locals to report nuisance offences.
Messaging will be displayed on 130 digital screens, billboards and street pole banners across the city, as well as online.
Cr Hall said council hoped the community to supported the taskforce.
“Every resident has a role to play in keeping our streets and neighbourhoods safe and clean so if you see anything out of place please report it,” he said.
“Our city is our home and I encourage all residents to take pride in where they live.”
