Ruff justice for dangerous dogs

Tougher penalties for dangerous dog owners, including jail time, have been introduced to state parliament after thousands of Queenslanders backed the proposed changes.

Owners of dogs that cause a person death or serious injury could face up to three years imprisonment or up to $108,000 fines under the new law.

The changes will also see a ban on restricted dog breeds, including Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier, and the Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario.

The new approach to dangerous dog control will be supported by a $7.5 million package to help the government develop a community education program and create consistent and effective government action in response to dog attacks.
