Building better lives in Loganlea

Construction has started on 18 one-bedroom public homes at Loganlea specially designed for older locals and people with a disability.

Four of the apartments will be built to “platinum accessibility”, meaning wider hallways and doors to support those with decreased mobility and those using wheelchairs, as well as slip-resistant floors and accessible windows.

The remaining 14 apartments will be built to a “gold standard”, which includes kitchens, laundries and living spaces that are built to accommodate people with higher mobility needs.

The complex will also feature a lift.

The state government has demolished two older homes to make way for the $6.7 million public-housing project, which is also designed for single people and couples looking to downsize.

Constuction is expected to finish sometime in 2024, with the 18 apartments joining over 40 other public and social homes currently being built in Logan.

The local Member for Waterford, Shannon Fentiman, said the complex was “well-located” for tenants, being close to public transport, the community centre, parks and shops.

“It’ll also have a communal space, central to the site, designed with visiting grandchildren in mind and includes a covered barbeque area, vegetable gardens and paths leading to and from the carpark,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Our community is not immune to the pressures we are seeing in housing nationally – but it is well placed to become a home for those in need.”

The housing minister Meaghan Scanlon said the complex was perfect for older people looking to downsize.

“Not only does it give them a new place to call home that’s more manageable, it also frees up larger homes for families who might need more bedrooms and living space,” she said.
