In the City of Logan, we know the leaders of tomorrow are sitting in the classrooms of today.
With talented teams of teaching staff guiding the way, our local schools are the learning platforms and
launching pads for the skills and ideas that will shape our future.
Logan City Council is determined to support those dreams and aspirations by giving our city’s youth a
helping hand along their chosen career pathways – even before they’ve left school.
As we head into the final term exam period, several Council initiatives are helping our soon-to-be school
leavers be as well prepared as possible for the next stage of their lives.
Council’s popular Bridge to Business event returned to Beenleigh State High School last week.
The mini jobs expo – attended by more than 60 local businesses looking for willing workers – gave
hundreds of year 10 to 12 students from schools across the city a glimpse at their possible employment
futures.
Bridge to Business is an initiative of my Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce, which helped 213 people –
including 58 young jobseekers – find work in 2022/23.
The Taskforce also supports the rollout of another exciting employment initiative for younger learners at two high schools this term.
Council’s Catapult Connects program links entrepreneurial students with business and industry mentors.
Year 9 students from Yarrabilba State Secondary College and Woodridge State High School are taking
part in the program this term.
Alongside local business partners, the students will undertake mock job interviews and resume-writing
workshops.
They will get the chance to visit businesses and witness workplace operations while also considering and solving workplace-related ‘challenges’.
Programs like these are invaluable in helping young students plan for success.
Council is also continuing to support those in Year 12 who aspire to a tertiary education but may be
concerned they cannot afford university.
The City of Logan Tertiary Educational Bursaries program provides $5000 over three years to successful applicants, to offset the costs of attending university.
Information and application details are available on Council’s website (visit logan.qld.gov.au and search
for ‘tertiary bursary’).
Applications open on Monday, October 23 and close on Friday, December 22.
Helping our city’s youth achieve their goals is one of the best ways to grow a skilled local workforce,
boost our economy and achieve a great quality of life for all
