Logan City Council has been named the nation’s climate champion after reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 80,000 tonnes annually.
Council’s Health, Environment and Waste Branch staff was awarded the Climate Champion Award at this year’s Cities Power Partnership Climate Awards.
Logan council won for its efforts to “support a greener future” and for reducing its emissions by 80,000 tonnes per year, which is the equivalent of taking 17,802 petrol vehicles off the road for one year.
Council’s emission-reducing initiatives include:
- becoming the 15th council in the country to achieve carbon-neutral certification earlier this year,
- installing solar PV systems on libraries aquatic and sports centres
- introducing a kerbside green waste recycling bin collection service
- generating electricity from gas captured at the Browns Plains Waste and Recycling Facility, and
- implementing a green fleet strategy.
Mayor Darren Power said the award highlighted the hard work that goes on behind the scenes in reducing city emissions.
“To be recognised as a Climate Champion is a credit to council’s efforts towards protecting and enhancing the environment for future generations,” Cr Power said.
“This recognition inspires us to continue to explore new ways to even further reduce our impact on the environment and tackle the challenges of climate change.”
The Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership is Australia’s largest network of local councils leading the way to a zero emissions future.
