Design to dreams to downsizing

After five years of meticulous design, Carmen and Frank Rejfek realised their Buccan dream home in 2001, but the time has come to downsize.

“We planned every aspect of the home – it was a very personal project,” Ms Rejfek said.

“The things we loved about the property was that it was quiet, it was in a cul-de-sac, and it felt like we were in the country even though we were close to everything.

“The block is a nice triangular shape, which we liked more than the long rectangular shape”.

The dam, which could be considered the centrepiece of the property, was installed by the Rejfeks for recreational use.

“We were very lucky because the area where we wanted the dam to go was all clay, whereas the rest was nice for growing grass and trees – it was truly a fluke,” she said.

“The dam water is crystal clear and very healthy.

“We purposely put the types of water lily that would aerate the dam well, and we stocked it with fish to keep the water healthy.

“We’ve never had any problems swimming in it and we’ve got a jetty there that we fish off – Christmas Day and other big gatherings are always so much fun around the water.”

The three-acre block is mostly cleared but has spots of large trees scattered across.

“We cleared and only kept trees that were far enough away from the house, so we don’t have any tree branches ever landing on anything,” Ms Rejfek said.

“The trees are really well spaced out, and it’s deliberate.

“We put five years into planning how we wanted the block to look before we built so we were there every weekend.”

And the thought put into the inside of the home was just as precise.

“We wanted it to be American and Australian federation styles joined together,” she said.

“And we wanted to be able to see the dam from all angles of the home to keep an eye on the kids whether we’re in the kitchen or the lounge or the study.”

Ms Rejfek said guests to the home were greeted by a “big, open space” which leads through to the kitchen and living areas.

“The layout is nicely spread out, which means there’s lots and lots of storage,” she said.

“We’ve got two massive linen cabinets and a walk-in pantry downstairs, we got storage under the staircase, another linen press upstairs in one of the bathrooms, and the walk-n-robe has been fitted out with a nice, modern style.”

It has been a great struggle for the family to put the house on the market.

“We have a daughter and a son who are both getting on with their lives, and so it would be nice to see a new family come in and enjoy what we’ve enjoyed,” she said.

“We can go to unit-living and then go overseas when we want to – that’s the new adventure, I guess.”
