It was a happy recycling Christmas

If your Xmas was anything like mine, it probably involved a lot of clearing and disposing of wrapping and packaging which might have led you to give more thought than usual to recycling and waste management. It’s exciting, therefore, to let you know that just before Xmas the Morrison government passed the first ever Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020.
This legislation will end the export of 645,000 tonnes of unprocessed plastic, paper, glass and tyres by Australia each year, and incentivise companies to take greater responsibility for the products they manufacture.
In passing this legislation we are ensuring that Australians take responsibility for our waste and recycling which will help clean up our oceans and improve our environment. This is part of a $1 billion transformation of our waste and recycling industry. Our reforms will create up to 10,000 jobs across Australia, boosting our economic recovery.
In our own community, BlockTexx in Woodridge is doing great work in recycling. They have their own technology that separates polyester and cotton materials such as clothes, sheets and towels of any colour or condition back into their high value raw materials of PET and Cellulose. This recovered PET can be re-used as soft polyester fibre suitable for use in textiles, packaging and building products. The recovered cellulose is a powder than can be used in many industries such as textiles and pharmaceuticals.
At a household level – Logan City Council do an awesome job of collecting all our waste and rubbish. It’s useful to remember that whatever we put in our recycling needs to be only recyclable items, otherwise it can’t be separated, and the whole lot will be sent to landfill. No-goes in the recycling bin include – plastic bags (including bin liners), nappies, ceramics, broken glass, glass other than jars and bottles and food.
Please enjoy the rest of your holiday break.
