Members of the Rail Trail Diversion Group last week protested outside Logan City Council chambers with signs, banners and umbrellas .
25 residents of Palm Lake Resort stood outside in the rain with the hopes of speaking to mayor Darren Power and deputy mayor Laurie Koranski about the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail’s intersection of the gated community.
“[It’s] no surprise that… neither could come out to speak to us,” a member of the group, Tracey Bertomeu, said.
But she said the group was able to get in contact with council’s corporate governance manager.
Ms Bertomeu said they asked the manager to confirm whether or not Cr Power and Cr Koranski would be attending this week’s council-led information sessions about the Rail Trail.
The manager said both councillors would be in attendence at the session, according to Ms Bertomeu, on Thursday 27 July at the Bethania Clubhouse from 9.30-11.00am, and at Waterford Hall from 11.30am-1.00.
The Rail Trail Diversion Group will be protesting at both sessions, Ms Bertomeu said.
The proposed 11.5-kilometre trail will intersect Palm Lake Resort, much to the dismay of its residents, who fear the trail will negatively impact their privacy and safety.
Adding to the residents’ fury, the track originally had a $7 million price tag, but now, following the addition of upgrades and security to the design, the predicted price has rocketed to $13 million.
