Cutting through time – Logan’s history unveiled

An exploration of Logan’s history comes to life through the captivating art of Chinese paper cutting for a current exhibition at the Logan Art Gallery.

Sunnybank artist Pamela See has created an interpretation of the schooner The Pride of Logan – a ship built adjacent to the Logan River in 1872 – using a contemporary form of Chinese paper cutting.

Her exhibition, aptly titled The Pride of Logan, features other paper cutting artworks and is one of three that recently opened at the gallery.

Ms See’s pieces were created to commemorate the Kingston Butter Factory, its former occupants and artefacts.

Works by Woodridge artist Imman Grashuis is also on display at the gallery.

Ms Grashuis aims to “explore human emotions” through her paintings using a motif of an astronaut.

Other exhibitions include one from the National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria, curated by Zoë Bastin and Claire Watson and titled Conflated.

It consists of artworks portraying experiences, behaviours and expressions through the use of inflatable forms and the cycle of breathing.

Ms Bastin, along with artist Eugenia Lim and Deakin University Professor of Visual Arts David Cross, were present at the exhibitions opening last Friday (28 July) and discussed the exhibition.

To complement the exhibition, free workshops teaching sculpture, paper cutting, collage and paint, artists’ trading cards and landscape painting will be available for adults and children.

Entry to the gallery is free.
