Christmas is a time to reflect and to spend quality time with family and loved ones.
Yuletide festivities this week will no doubt be warmly embraced by all after a challenging year.
For many in our community however, hardship including social and financial challenges, are a daily reality.
While celebrating the joys of Christmas, I urge you to spare a thought, and perhaps some loose change or time, for those doing it tough.
Christmas is about giving and making a difference – no matter how big or small.
There are many ways to get involved in charitable causes across our city, whether volunteering time to support the elderly, the homeless, or donating gifts.
Sometimes, it’s simply about being nice. A thank you to the person working the check-out, a smile to the library assistant, or being patient while lining up at the shops.
It’s about being conscientious and safe and considerate to others on our roads – and not driving after one too many beers!
Take care of one another, check in on your neighbours, and be extra kind to those who are most vulnerable.
The innocent laughter from a child, or the timeless grin from an elder, are sprinkles of Christmas magic that we sometimes take for granted.
I like the Winston Churchill quote, ”we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
With relaxed health restrictions now allowing more people into our homes, I hope you safely celebrate these new freedoms.
It is because we have worked together, and supported one another, that we can relax a little and enjoy the company of family and friends.
By spreading the warmth of the Christmas season to all those around us, we are reminded just what a beautiful and caring place we live in.
On behalf of Council staff, and my fellow Councillors, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and prosperous and happy New Year.
