Coldest day in May ahead

This week marks the coldest days in May in years, an expert has said.

The cold snap Logan residents are feeling won’t last long, but it’s going to get colder before it gets hotter.

Predictions suggest Logan will reach as low a five degrees celcius tomorrow, with some areas, such as Jimboomba, hitting four degrees.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist, Harry Clark, said the cold snap would be over by Wednesday (10 May).

“Generally, for most areas in the southern parts of the state, it’s been the coldest… May day for… some years,” he said

“Good news is, for those that don’t like the cold, we will see these conditions start to ease around Wednesday as our wind flow turns a little bit more onshore, returning a bit more moisture, a bit more warmth from the ocean, back towards much of Queensland.

“Tuesday morning is likely to be the coldest morning for nearly all locations except perhaps the far north of the state.”

Mr Clark said “gusty” winds are making it feel colder than it actually is.

“We’ve seen much of the southeast sit at around… the high teens in terms of absolute temperature, but when you add the wind it feels more like 13 or 14 degrees,” he said.

“So certainly those gusty south-westerly winds are making it feel cooler than the actual temperature would suggest and certainly adding to that wind chill factor.

“The good news there is we will see those winds ease after today.”

According to Mr Clark, winds are travelling around 50 to 60 kilometres per hour.

He said the current lack of moisture in the air would also contribute to perceived coldness.
