Zero tolerance for domestic violence

The month of May marks the beginning of Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

On Wednesday council will join with the community at a candlelight vigil at the Logan Entertainment Centre to remember and reflect on all those impacted by domestic and family violence.

This event gives us an opportunity to come together and deliver a resounding no to domestic and family violence.

We want to send a clear message that any form of violence is never acceptable and that we each have a part to play in speaking out against it.

Council is committed to creating a safer city that respects everyone’s right to be safe and well and support the agencies working within the community to help those affected by domestic violence.

These dedicated and passionate agencies are dealing with the reality of domestic and family violence each day.

They are on the ground working to support and guide people through situations which many of us could never fully comprehend and they do this with a sensitivity and commitment to finding solutions to protect the well-being of those they are dealing with.

Representatives from some of these locally based organisations will be sharing their experiences during this week’s vigil.

I’m sure their addresses will be powerful and emotive and remind us of the importance of taking the time to remember all those who have lost their lives and the people left behind from family and friends to neighbours and workmates.

We want to pay our respects to all those affected, not only locally, but right across Australia.

This event is also a sharp reminder that we all have a role to play in raising awareness and standing side by side that there is no tolerance for domestic and family violence in our community.

I encourage the community to be part of this moving and powerful event which begins at 5.15pm on the Logan Entertainment Centre forecourt.
