Art bonanza at gallery

A local schoolteacher will be among several artists showcasing their works at Logan Art Gallery next month.

Works from local art groups, university students, and Indigenous Australians will be included across four exhibitions starting on Friday 5 May.

April Giblin, a high school art teacher, will have artworks shown in her Ebb and Flow exhibition, in which there will be five large paintings depicting different forms of nature.

Ms Giblin said she wanted the audience to bring their own perspective to the art.

“I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and create something a little bit new that the audience might connect with,” she said.

“I want people to look at [the art] and bring their own ideas and imagination.

“They are my interpretations of the world around me in an abstract way.”

Ms Giblin said everyone interpreted art differently, with several mothers telling her the art reminded them of their birthing experiences.

“It kind of gets into a part of people’s brains and they don’t realise until they see it,” she said.

The artworks are her abstract interpretations of rainforests, mountains and earth.

“I have a deep connection to the environment,” she said.

Although Ms Giblin typically has a reference photo or idea to base her projects on her art ended up “taking its own direction”.

“I have a starting point and a bit of a plan… but then you enter a state of creativity in your mind, and it takes you on a journey,” she said.

“It’s about entering a state of flow and making art. ”

She said the concept of “ebb and flow”, although obvious in the final products, was apparent in her artistic process.

The other exhibitions at Logan Art Gallery will include works from: the Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre (a space where Guugu Yimithirr people of all ages pass on their cultural traditions as well as their traditional language) and QUT fashion students; Peter Hughes, a local artist who makes sculptures and large-scale paintings of bird life; and an exhibition from the Logan Art Collection.

The showcase will also feature the launch of musician Milena Luna’s new album and free screen-printing, pottery and painting workshops.

The gallery will run from Friday 5 May until Saturday 10 June.
