Accessibility an important goal for everyone

Accessibility is much more than access and inclusion, it is about providing, designing, and creating spaces that promote equality and dignity through access and inclusion.

As a Council’s it is important that we continue to make the City of Logan more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

In the City of Logan, 6.6 per cent of our population require help in their day-to-day lives due to disability.

Over the years Council has worked closely with people with disability, carers and caregivers and those working in the disability sector to provide inclusive supports across a range of our services, programs and community infrastructure.

Last week was a proud moment for Council when our newly redeveloped Kingston Butter Factory Precinct was named Queensland’s inaugural ‘Accessible Venue of the Year’ at the prestigious Queensland Music Awards.

When we undertook the redevelopment of the Kingston Butter Factory it was important that we the arts and entertainment was accessible to all members of our community.

Council wanted to ensure we created a venue that catered to everyone – we wanted people living with disability to feel welcomed, included and to they can enjoy all the city has to offer. What seem like smalls things to a lot of us can be a major barrier for someone living with disability.

To ensure this accessibility the KBF was designed to have flat access to and around the precinct, a Hush Room with a soundproof area with direct viewing to the Butterbox Theatre, a larger-than-standard changing facility and an accessible route to and from Kingston Railway Station.

I am extremely proud to be part of a Council that is ensuring all members of the community are not denied the basic human right of equality and dignity.

All people, regardless of ability have an equal right to participate in our community.

I would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter. Please take care on the roads during this busy time.
