A group of friends, with occupations ranging from herpetologists and ecologists to snake catchers and enthusiasts, have created a resource called the Australian Snake Identification, Education and Advocacy (ASIEA).
ASIEA endeavour to “educate people around the country about what snakes they may find in their backyard”, with a strong online presence of more than 60,000 followers on Facebook,
The group of snake experts and lovers have created “Snakes of the City”, a series involving free, public infographics for Logan residents to easily access.
“We aim to hopefully educate people about peaceful co-existence with snakes,” co-founder Alexandra Holm said.
There are 30 infographics pertaining to the Logan area, with information on a variety of snakes and their environments.
“We are all about gentle education, kindness, and being sensitive to people’s fears about snakes, with no question ever being ‘stupid’,” Ms Holm said.
“We aim to hopefully educate people about peaceful co-existence with snakes.
“We pride ourselves on moderating our [Facebook] page very closely to maintain a positive learning environment.”
Eddie Street, a local known as the Logan Snake Catcher, supports ASIEA’s efforts.
“I think it’s a good idea,” Mr Street said.
“Logan is quite snaky.
“Since Christmas it’s been really busy – lots of carpet pythons, common tree snakes, eastern browns, red bellies, eastern taipans.”
Mr Street said Logan residents were lucky they weren’t seeing the inland taipan – the most venomous snake in the world.
“I’ve been [catching snakes] for five years,” he said.
“I love snakes – absolutely adore them.”
