Cameron Smith’s childhood home sold

NRL legend, Cameron Smith’s childhood home has just sold in Marsden, well above the reserve.

Located on Birch Street, the two-storey home has three large bedrooms and a big balcony, as well as Cameron Smith’s footy jerseys and memorabilia scattered throughout.

Cameron Smith’s parents, Sonia and Wayne Smith bought the property back in 1981 for just $29,170 and two years after moving in the footy legend was born.

Growing up, Cameron spent 12 years playing footy for the Logan Brothers Rugby League Club alongside his brother Matt, while his mum managed, and his dad coached the team.

We can only imagine the amount of time spent playing and practicing footy in this Marsden backyard.

After attending Marsden State High School, Cameron went on to play for the Melbourne Storm and became captain of the Australian team, helping the Maroons win eight straight State of Origin series.

Sales Agent from Ray White Marsden, Rebecca Cuderman said it was an emotional sale for Mrs Smith.

“She is wanting to downsize, to go to live with her boys (Cameron and Matt) out on acreage,” she said.

“It was an emotional sale, as soon as the hammer came down Sonia was in tears.

“It’s the only home she’s known for 40 years, she raised her family here.”

The 3-bedroom home spent less than 3 weeks on the market before selling at auction in February.

During the auction there were 18 registered bidders with the bidding starting at $300,000.

After a back-and-forth bidding war between two buyers, the hammer fell at $489,000.

Ms Cuderman said Mrs Smith walked away with more than expected.

“Over $60,000 more than what we were expecting,” she said.

“She was expecting to walk away with far less so this really has been able to set her up to buy or build whatever she likes.”

Ms Cuderman said the home would be a great renovation project.

“A father and son duo, who run a construction company have bought it to renovate and rent out,” she said.

“The home has so much opportunity, as downstairs offered proper legal height which many properties don’t have, not to mention also the possibility of building a further granny flat out the rear side.”

Ms Cuderman said Marsden is an attractive first home buyer’s area and investment market.

“Marsden has changed so much, now we have the number one State School, we’re central to all motorways and local shops, and we border the new commercial precincts both in Crestmead and Berrinba,” she said.

“Overall we still have diverse types of properties available for affordable prices, so it’s been attractive to first home buyers and also the investment market given the positive cash flows.”
