New recruits face massive challenge

WITH youth crime a key focus of state government, road deaths at high rates, and police announcing a war against domestic violence, it’s high alert for new recruits.

Crestmead, Logan Central and Browns Plains police stations will each take on two cadets from the state’s latest graduation, while Jimboomba, Loganholme and Logan will hire one each.

It’s part of an annual announcement from the state government and police to show a strong presence.

But this year’s intake faces particularly challenging times, according to latest reports and numbers being argued in parliament.

Over the last six months, graduates undertook specialist domestic violence training, and risk and trauma management, while also participating in units with a specific awareness on cultural complexities.

“The graduates will now partake in the first year constable training program where they will hone their skills under the guidance of experienced officers,” a police statement said.

“As you move into the first year constable program, I urge you to soak up every moment of the experience, learn from those around you and immerse yourself in the community,” acting police minister Mark Furner said.

“These recruits will be supported with the very best equipment on the market … new integrated load bearing vests, 25 new Mobile Police Beats, and state-of-the-art body-worn cameras with live-stream capabilities to be rolled out throughout the service.”

Commissioner Katarina Carroll said being a police officer was no easy task.

“You will face many challenges and you will experience many hardships,” she said.

“But when facing these challenges, you will be rewarded, you will feel great satisfaction when you are there for people in need, and the relationships you build will last a lifetime.”

The newest graduates come from diverse backgrounds, including hospitality, construction and education.
