Council looks to install electric vehicle charging stations

Logan City Council will look to join other authorities to install electric vehicle charging stations around the city.

The move would be to install charging stations on council-owned properties.

About 60 potential sites would include Logan Entertainment Centre, Logan Metro Sports Centre, council’s administration centre in Logan Central and the Logan Village Green.

There is at least one site under consideration in each of the 12 electoral divisions across the city.

Location, nearby facilities and grid capacity, along with driver and pedestrian safety, were considered when identifying sites.

Council’s environment chair Jon Raven said the plan aligned with a commitment to carbon reduction and helping mitigate climate change issues.

“We are committed to supporting the uptake of electric vehicles across the City of Logan,” he said.

“We have some of the strongest environment credentials of any council across Australia, and these initiatives further bolster those credentials.

“Electric vehicles are the future, and we want to give residents plenty of options to conveniently charge their cars locally.”

Next year, council will invite submissions from charging station providers to install them at approved sites.

Council has committed to have half its passenger vehicle fleet transitioned to electric or hybrid by 2026.

It also wants a 20% reduction in pollution and waste, and has a target to be carbon neutral by the end of the year.
