Road statistics an alarming figure

There is a small story we published this week with alarming consequences.

It talks about road deaths reaching the highest number, possibly ever, across the state.

In Logan alone, 15 people have already died on the roads this year. And while that’s two less than the same time last year, it’s 15 too many.

A staggering proportion of deaths and injuries have been of motorcycle riders, the latest a 15-year-old boy on a trail bike at New Beith.

While driving the streets, it is evident there is at times little respect for each other among motorists.

To ensure safer driving, it’s simple – don’t speed, stay alert, don’t drink or drug drive, and buckle up.

In most people’s minds, these easy-to-follow steps are a no brainer. Problem is, a brainless few think they’re above the law, more skillful behind the wheel, or aspiring race car drivers.

It’s frustrating to see the lives of families and innocent victims ruined because someone fails to respect those around them.

Police will be out in force on the roads these school holidays. They’re not revenue raising. They’re saving lives.

We can only hope those doing the wrong thing are caught, and feel the full punishment of the law.
