Good day’s pay for an honest day’s work

LOW unemployment is a great thing. It opens opportunity for all people to work and earn for their families.

It enables opportunities to learn new skills and build careers.

However, the bitter edge is a skills shortage, alongside current hikes in both inflation and interest rates.

Many businesses are feeling the pinch. We receive reports from business owners frequently complaining about poor attitudes among some workers who feel they shouldn’t have to work for their money.

There are unfortunately some who accept positions, and simply don’t turn up. There are others who believe they’re capable of being general manager from day 1.

The federal opposition has flagged a good idea which allows older people to work without penalising their pensions. It partly solves the skills shortage, and instils trust in a workforce.

A lot of what we’re seeing seems to be driven by values.

Some people hold what are often referred to as old fashioned values – the belief that a hard day’s work deserves an honest reward.

These values shouldn’t be referred to as prehistoric. They’re not. Honest people with high degrees of integrity will still believe that it’s important to contribute to their community, to “turn up” and to do the right thing.

Good employers will then ensure the rewards are distributed fairly.
