Logan must be more than ‘just a thoroughfare’

“Live in the present” may be the advice from monks on mountains but in our world, we need to look forward occasionally to see the headlight of the oncoming train.

Looking forward 10 years, the Olympics will be happening all around us. With 14 venues in Brisbane and 6 on the Gold Coast, Logan again is just a thoroughfare.

Even Ipswich, Toowoomba and Redlands have venues while a new high-speed rail will help to ensure that people can pass us without stopping.

Businesses in those cities with venues will be first in line for contracts and the many perks of being involved in the world’s biggest sporting event.

We know that Logan is a young, growing city and in ten years’ time, we will be the economic powerhouse for Southeast Queensland, so it seems crazy that we are so massively overlooked.

Maybe we will get a small investment or stadium for training of a lesser sport, but that pales into comparison with our neighbours.

As a business owner in Logan, I can see this oversight extending the myth of Logan as just a worker’s village.

I’m sick of seeing Logan get the scraps left by our better represented cities. With venues announced, our only hope now is to be selected to host some of the new sports that are not yet sanctioned as Olympic sports.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will feature surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing.

These are just the ones we know about now.

The Asian Games this year will feature the first eSports Olympic medals which seems wild, but I guess that is the way the world is going.

We must stand up and be seen outside Logan as a viable location for business and investment, including the chance to host an Olympic sport rather than being the Olympic thoroughfare.
