Hoons have again been delivered a wake-up call from police with one man copping 22 demerit points and $3213 in fines – all in one hit.
Last Friday night, a large gathering of hoons was pulled up by police at Ironbark Close, Berrinba, one of the favoured gathering spots for petrol heads.
A maroon Ford Falcon was observed allegedly travelling along the Logan Motorway at Meadowbrook at 141km/h. This vehicle was tracked to Berrinba where it was then intercepted.
A man, 20, was issued with a number of traffic infringement notices for speeding, driving a defective vehicle and issued with a defective vehicle repair notice.
In addition to this, the vehicle was immobilised for seven days and the driver issued with a six month high speed suspension. Fines totalling $3213 and 22 demerit points were issued.
It was there that police saw hoons starting to gather.
Queensland Police acted swiftly and conducted a static roadside breath testing operation.
An additional 44 traffic infringement notices for a variety of offences relating to road rules and vehicle standards were then issued.
Police conducted over 30 roadside breath tests upon drivers during this time. In total this operation cost the drivers of these vehicles $9862 and collectively 91 demerit points.
Hooning will not be tolerated on our roads as this behaviour puts the lives of the drivers and other road users at significant harm.
Police in Logan are encouraging members of the public to help make our roads safer by reporting hoon activities such as;
- Illegal street racing
- Travelling at high speeds
- Burnout offences
There are two simple ways to do this. Simply call the Hoon Hotline on 13HOON (134 666) or report hoons online. You should capture the below details:
- what the vehicle is and looks like
- what hooning activity the vehicle was doing
- the registration plates
- the date, time and where the vehicle was.
This will help the police identify and stop the hoon. Remember, if a crime is happening now please contact Triple Zero, 000.
