THERE is something particularly sweet about a town steeped in tradition.
Beenleigh will come together on Saturday, May 11 to commemorate our century-old (and then some) cane history and I cannot wait.
Usually, I am behind the microphone and on the judging panel for the best float, but not in 2024.
I am excited that this year I will be changing things up and will be joining my staff and the ‘Bert van Manen MP Float’ along the parade route!
Last year, I was lucky enough to borrow a trailer from one of our local charity partners, Nightlight, and my staff and I adorned it with cane stalks for a long procession through the main street of town which is generally enjoyed by thousands.
Since the festival made its much-anticipated return in 2021, the Beenleigh Cane Festival and the Gala Ball has become one of the biggest festivals on the Logan City calendar.
Colourful floats, marching bands, and local groups will showcase the rich heritage and spirit of our community.
It is a spectacle.
It is everything that is wonderful about this special part of the world.
For many members of the community, the event evokes memories from when they were much younger.
For the newer members of the community, it gives them a chance to learn about the history of Beenleigh and our iconic industry contributions.
Visitors from outside the area can immerse themselves in family-friendly activities and hopefully learn a little something about our region and traditions.
Rotary Club of Beenleigh deserve a mammoth amount of credit for all the tireless work they do in organising and running the event annually.
All monies raised go towards local projects. Over many years dozens of local charities and not-for-profit organisations have benefited from tens of thousands in financial contributions.
Their selflessness needs to be commended.
I take huge pride in knowing that this event is operated in the Forde electorate and in every instance given, I sing its praises outside the electorate.
So, bring your family and friends along and I’ll see you out on George Street next Saturday!
