100 days of Mayor Raven

I have a confession.

I’ve been so busy over the last few months I completely missed my 100-day anniversary since being sworn in as Mayor.

With all the exciting things going on in our city, I thought – although I’m a couple of weeks late – it’s time to reflect on the things we’ve achieved for Logan so far.

One of my election commitments was to investigate a skid pad.

Too often we approach hooning and dangerous driving with an enforcement mindset.

The skid pad was a request from car enthusiasts who wanted a place to enjoy using their cars and engage with young drivers.

A few councillors joined me on Tuesday night at the RACQ Mobility Centre in Cornubia to put this facility to the test.

Apart from being a lot of fun, we also learned about driver safety in dangerous situations.

We were supervised while drifting at RACQ’s state of the art facility that is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Olympians and some of the best drivers in the world have trained on that skid pad.

This is one option for our city that councillors can consider.

One of my other commitments was more mobile and covert cameras to address hooning hotspots or other anti-social behaviour in our parks and public places.

In our council budget handed down in June, we provided funding for 24 new cameras.

The budget included $1.8 million over two years for a new rapid-response road pavement repair team with a primary focus on potholes, as well as council’s first step to making rates fairer – with early payment discounts being rolled out to owner occupiers (in the Residential 1 category).

The vast majority of owner-occupiers will be getting a bigger discount now than they did last year!

This work will continue over the next year as we address historic issues with our ratings categories that make it hard to target all owner-occupiers in the city with discounts.

Ratepayers around our city will benefit from the big infrastructure projects on the way.

Logan is getting its second Olympic-sized swimming pool, with construction on the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre upgrade already happening.

Work on Teviot Road is starting soon, there’s the new Waterford West District Park on the way, and of course the Loganlea Road upgrade.

This is just a snippet of the first 100 days, I’m looking forward to updating you again soon.
