If a professional conductor has his way, Logan will be home to a “world-standard” community orchestra next year.
The Logan City Orchestras, led by Dr Lewes Peddell, looks to “build pride” in Logan and create opportunities for local musicians.
A former Director of the Arts Academy at Canterbury College in Waterford, Dr Peddell, has spent the past five years developing the concept for the orchestra.
“The idea stemmed from seeing talented students and wondering, ‘where do they go next?’,” he said.
“Not everyone pursues the conservatorium of music or a professional career, but many still want music in their lives.”
The orchestra is open to students studying music at university, recent graduates, and high school students working towards becoming emerging pre-professional musicians.
Music teachers and others passionate about performance are encouraged to join, whether they’ve continued playing or rediscovered their musical talents.
The flagship orchestra, featuring strings, woodwinds, and brass with a core of 25–30 string players, will serve as a generational melting pot where talented teenage musicians perform alongside those in their 80s, united by a love for music.
“This is about building a community,” Mr Peddell said.
“It’s about providing mentorship, sharing skills, and creating a space where musicians can thrive together.”
Eight rehearsals are planned ahead of the debut concert in June 2025.
While the audition process is not yet open, those interested in joining the orchestra or learning more can sign up for updates through the Logan City Orchestras website.
“Our goal is to eventually form multiple ensembles and collaborate with other local musicians and performance groups,” Dr Peddell said.
“But right now, we’re focused on building a strong foundation for the future.”
