Woodridge gardening project to benefit all

A Woodridge garden maintenance initiative will keep lawns tidy and provide employment opportunities for locals living with a disability.

The initiative, called Adeptly, is being run by not-for-profit organisation Lutheran Service’s Keystone Centre, and is taking on clients, located within 10km of Woodridge, who need mowing, edging, weeding, pruning or hedge trimming services.

Adpetly is designed for participants who live with a disability to learn new skills, grow independence and earn a steady income.

Lutheran Services disability services regional manager, Jules De Wit, said the initiative gave those living with a disability access to meaningful work and a fair wage.

“Our clients want to work – they’re motivated, capable and have so much to contribute,’’ Ms De Wit said.

“But the employment landscape doesn’t always accommodate people with a disability – particularly those with higher support needs.

“It’s great to see them shine, take pride in their work and gain confidence every week.”

Adeptly participant Denis said the initiative was exciting and made him feel hopeful for the future.

“I feel happy for the future because I get to earn money, which will help me get new opportunities,” he said.

“What work means to me is experience, money and working with my friends.”

Earlier this year, Keystone Centre launched a woodworking program called The Shed, which focused on teaching those living with disabilities to make and restore furniture.

The centre, a self-described hub of skill building and inclusion, supports roughly 30 National Disability Insurance Scheme participants at any one time.

“We want to deliver a reliable service to the community while creating real employment opportunities for our clients, nurturing social inclusion, and setting new standards for fair pay and skills development,’’ Ms De Wit said.
