More than one quarter of a $500 million state government infrastructure fund will go towards building a new wastewater facility in Logan’s west.
The fund was announced in April this year – open to all developers to help build water supply, lighting, sewerage, stormwater and roads to support new housing.
Logan City Council was one of 178 applicants that showed “overwhelming interest” in the fund, and over the weekend was confirmed as its first recipient.
The council’s request: that the state chip in to build a new wastewater plant in Logan, as its existing ones are at capacity, stunting housing growth.
“… funding under the Residential Activation Fund will support construction of the Chambers Flat Wastewater Treatment Plant to unlock more than 20,000 new homes,” a Queensland government statement announced.
“This infrastructure will enable more than 20,000 new homes to be built, beginning in 2028 as part of Stage 1 and will ultimately service over 60,000 new homes once fully operational.
“The fund will deliver a $135.98 million boost towards the $334.53 million project which is critical to the continued development of Yarrabilba as well as growth areas within Logan City Council’s planning of Park Ridge and Logan Village.”
Applicants with projects currently ready to start construction and those that demonstrate the location has “urgent housing needs” were said to be prioritised for funding.
An additional $1.5 billion will be rolled out through the fund over the next four years.
Mayor Jon Raven said the funding was a huge win for Logan.
“… and all the people who want to move to our growing city,” he said.
“Our city is the fastest-growing in the state – but with our wastewater infrastructure at capacity, we would have had to soon stop approving new housing.
“The Residential Activation Fund will support the delivery of tens of thousands of homes and save our ratepayers from having to fund the infrastructure charge shortfall.
“When I spoke to the premier before the election about helping local government with the cost of infrastructure this is exactly what he promised and today he has kept that commitment.”
