Tributes flow for Loganholme police officer Kym Slade

Senior constable Kym Slade died at Loganholme police station on Thursday 20 July after a firearm discharged in what police have called “non-suspicious circumstances”.

Tributes have flowed in for the 48-year-old police officer, with flowers left outside the Loganholme station and messages dedicated to her online.

“It is with deep sadness, the Queensland Police Service confirm the passing of a police officer,” a police statement read.

“The QPS is providing immediate support to her family and colleagues and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.”

Ms Slade’s identity was confirmed in an email sent by Commissioner Katarina Carroll to the 12,000-plus police service, according to News Corp.

“Just after midday today, Senior Constable Slade died following the discharge of a police issued firearm at Loganholme Police Station,” the email read.

“I know you will all join me by keeping Kym’s family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts at this extremely difficult time.

“I would also like to sincerely thank the police and first responders who assisted at the scene, my thoughts are also with you all.”

Ms Carroll said the coming days would be difficult for the police force, and she urged her colleagues to “look out for each other”.

“There are many support options available for our members and if you need help, please speak to a senior psychologist, social worker, police chaplain or a PSO (Peer Support Officer).

“To all our members, I mourn with you tonight.

“With Honour She Served.”

Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commissioner.
