Time to start preparing for storm season

FIRSTLY, a big thank you to everyone who has sent through submissions to give feedback about Logan Plan – and in particular, those about flood mapping.

Your Councillors and I have been working around the clock with council staff on changes and improvements based on your suggestions and experiences. If you haven’t made a submission yet, there’s still time until the end of the month. Just email LoganPlan@logan.qld.gov.au.

Understanding flood risks in our city is important as we enter storm season. Earlier this year we saw localised flooding after ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred impacted South East Queensland.

This week is Get Ready Queensland Week, a time for residents and businesses to prepare for severe weather events.

Do you know what to do before, during and after a cyclone, flood, bushfire or storm?

We’ve had fire bans in Logan and other parts of the state for the past few days.

The BOM is also predicting above average rainfall between now and December.

That means we should all know how to keep ourselves safe. This includes having a household emergency plan and an emergency kit.

You might lose power, water or gas, or not be able to get to the shops.

If you had to evacuate, where would you go? Could you stay at your property and be self-sufficient?

We’re also making sure our staff are ready for the summer storm season.

This month we’re holding disaster management exercises to ensure we’re well prepared.

But we need everyone to Get Ready too.

There’s great information on Council’s website (logan.qld.gov.au) – just click on the ‘Disaster and emergencies’ button.

You should also have the Disaster Dashboard (disaster.logan.qld.gov.au) saved as a favourite to get real-time information on how to stay safe.

As always, I’ll keep you informed if we have floods or other disasters on social media, including Facebook live.
