When you first see “The Scooter Gang” written in print, you might picture a mob of leather-wearing, bearded bikies in a clubhouse calling for another shot from the bar.
“Let’s ride,” says the tagline at the top of the promotional material they’re sending out.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
The Scooter Gang is a new group meeting this weekend for the first time.
It’s for seniors and mature-aged adults with mobility scooters in the Logan west area.
And the goal is to look for off-road outings in areas such as Boronia Heights, Forestdale, Hillcrest, Park Ridge, Heritage Park or Regents Park.
“Outings for senior citizens can lead to improvements in physical, emotional and mental health,” group founder Lillian Sranic says.
Activities would improve cognitive function, better emotional health, improve mood, increase life span and improve sleep. They’d lead to better vitamin D levels which can prevent heart disease, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.
“No matter the age, being able to leave the house from time to time is crucial to remaining healthy,” she says.
“Social isolation can hurt one’s well-being, or even more quickly intensify a general state of decline. Getting out and enjoying interactions with others is a tried and true remedy.”
She’d like to help people meet up for social outings, barbecues, picnics at Bushland Reserves and other nice spots.
The only joining requirement is to own a mobility scooter.
“No need to be stuck at home bored out of mind,” Ms Stranic says.
There is no cost although Ms Stranic says a gold coin donation would be appreciated.
