Last November, a group of 12 women who sew locally for the Forest Lake branch of the charity Pillowcases for Oncology Kids donated 213 pillowcases to the Brisbane Children’s Hospital.
The pillowcases, made from a range of brightly coloured and patterned fabrics, are given to children undergoing cancer treatment, to personalise their rooms and hopefully bring them some comfort.
Group coordinator Jill Nason said the group hoped to sew even more pillowcases this year and thanked their major sponsor, Forest Lake’s Heritage Bank, for enabling the initiative to continue.
“When we receive a grant from the Forest Lake Heritage Bank, we shop for fabrics with patterns suitable for ages from babies through to teenagers,” Ms Nason said.
“We then cut the fabric, distribute it to our sewers, and when they are completed, they are washed, ironed, and packed individually, ready for delivery to the hospital.
“We get together a few times a year to do the packing and enjoy a morning tea and a chat and a lot of laughs.”
