Ground was broken last week on the first 80 lots of what will be a 309-lot development at Flagstone.
The community, to be called Riverstone Springs, is part of the broader Flinders Lakes development, which will be home to more that 21,000 dwellings once complete in 2045.
“It’s an exciting time for us here at Pacific Community because it’s our first community that we’re delivering in the Greater Flagstone Authority Development Area,” development director at Pacific Communities, Stephen Harrison said.
“It’s also the stepping stone to our larger community of Flinders Lakes which will… boost the affordable housing supply in south-east Queensland over the next 40 years.
“A key part of what we’re doing at Flinders Lake is also delivering education facilities, health facilities, and partnering with the university. So it’s really exciting times for us to also bring on a lot of community and social infrastructure.”
Logan City councillor Natalie Willcocks said the developers were “doing it right”.
“They’re putting in the infrastructure first so that we can actually build these homes for families,” she said.
Deputy premier Jarrod Bleijie at the sod-turning ceremony last week pointed out that first-time homebuyers wouldn’t need to pay stamp duty on any homes in this development.
“We have abolished stamp duty for first home owners buying or building their first home in Queensland,” he said.
He acknowledged the community was facing a “housing crisis” and said the focus needed to be on supply.
“It’s important that we focus on all types of housing and releasing all land across Queensland because that means that everybody has an opportunity to live the Australian dream of owning their own home.”
