Logan seniors computer group sharing digital skills after 30 years

A small group of seniors in Logan has spent three decades helping each other navigate the digital world.

The Logan Seniors Computer Group meets twice a month at Logan West Library in Browns Plains, bringing together older residents who want to learn more about computers, mobile phones and tablets.

The group was started in 1995 by Dawn Smith, who said it began simply with a desire to learn more about technology and share that knowledge with others.

“I’d only just started getting into computers and I thought, well, I need to learn,” she said.

“I advertised, brought along some tea and coffee, and it went from there.”

The group has moved locations over the years, starting in Greenbank before meeting in a scout’s hall and eventually settling at Logan West Library.

Today, around 20 members are on the books, although weekly attendance is usually smaller.

Participants range from beginners to more experienced users, with members helping each other understand everything from basic operating systems to sending emails and using smartphones.

“We’ve got beginners to advanced, and some very experienced people who can help,” Ms Smith said.

“We teach each other and learn together. It’s very friendly and very relaxed.”

Members are encouraged to bring along their own laptops, tablets or phones to work through questions with others in the group. Sessions also include discussion groups and occasional presentations, while morning tea provides time to socialise.

The group is open to seniors and runs from 9am to 12pm on the second and fourth Saturdays of most months, depending on library availability.

Meetings do not run during school holidays, when the library space is used by students.

Ms Smith said interest had fluctuated over the years, with the club previously reaching about 30 members.

While numbers have dropped more recently, she hopes more local seniors will consider coming along.

“It’s just a place where people can learn and help each other,” she said.

People interested in attending can contact Ms Smith on 0413 938 947 for more information.
