Logan City Council opens evacuation and refuge centres

Logan City Council has activated an evacuation centre at the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre, opening from 7.00 am on Thursday, 6 March, to assist residents in need of shelter and support.

In addition, council has established temporary ‘drop-in’ places of refuge for those seeking a place to recharge and take a break.

Among these locations is Jimboomba’s Caddies Community Centre located at 9-33 South Street, Jimboomba, which has now been officially activated as the emergency refuge centre for the Jimboomba area.

The facility is operating 24/7 at the request of the council, offering food, shelter, bathrooms, and showers to residents affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Impact Care Services Project Manager Heath Henwood confirmed that Caddies has been operational for several hours and will continue running as long as needed.

“It’s not full accommodation – we’ve got no bedding or anything like that, it’s just a place for refuge, warm showers, some food and drinks,” Mr Henwood said.

The centre is also seeking volunteers to help manage its 24-hour operation.

“We’ve broken it into shifts – mornings, afternoons, and through the night – and we’re just trying to ensure we have enough people, especially for the overnight shifts,” Mr Henwood added.

Anyone available to assist is encouraged to contact him at Caddies on 0411 870 213.

Another temporary refuge has been set up at Bethania Community Centre, located at 88-118 Station Road, Bethania, providing residents with a place to recharge phones or devices, enjoy tea or coffee, and rest.
