The Kingston East Neighbourhood Group (KENG) crew is working hard to help Logan residents recover from the 2022 floods.
A little over six months ago, with the help of the state government, KENG became a flood recovery hub.
Since then, the hub’s service navigator, Maureen Yeow, has been busy helping struggling locals to get back on their feet.
“We became a flood hub… and very soon we found a lot of people at our doorstep asking for food, shelter, advice and everything else because they had been affected by the flood,” Ms Yeow said.
She said KENG’s support was not just for Kingston, but the entirety of Logan.
“We look for people who have suffered from floods and are feeling a bit lost,” she said.
“Either they need counselling, they need help financially, they’ve lost their belongings, their livelihood, or they are just traumatized by the whole thing.”
Ms Yeow said KENG referred those struggling to relevant services around Logan.
They provide food and grocery vouchers as well as access to different activities.
“Some of them are just very lonely and isolated – they’d like more friends, so we connect them,” she said.
So far, Ms Yeow has around 20 clients she is helping directly.
She said an additional 50 are frequently attending her information sessions.
“We’re hoping to get more and more [clients],” she said.
“Whoever needs help can come to us and we will try to help them to recover from the floods.”
She said although the work could be sad, it was always meaningful.
“Often people don’t even know there are people who want to help them,” she said.
“It is very emotional, but it’s also very rewarding.
“My colleagues and I comfort each other and take care of each other a lot.”
The KENG flood recovery hub also provides advice surrounding government grants.
“We are trained by the government on what grants are available to people,” she said.
“I’s really difficult for people to navigate whether they qualify or not, so we help them through it.”
“We also have a lot of help from Logan City Council in disaster relief packs and information, to reach as many people as possible,” she said.
