Joy in homecoming despite early exit

Logan-based reality star Annikki Chand said she was happy to be back in Logan despite getting kicked off the “adventure of a lifetime”.

Ms Chand starred in Channel 9’s new show, The Summit, in which 14 strangers embark on a mission to reach the peak of a mountain New Zealand for the chance to win some cash.

This year, the three winners won a share of $490,000.

Contestants had to work as a team through dangerous terrain, wild weather and a range of obstacles to reach the summit in only 14 days in order to claim the prize money.

The hike was on New Zealand’s South Island, spanning over 2000 kilometres and to heights of almost 2600 metres.

Ms Chand, who was born in Darwin and moved to Logan in her teenage years, said she was not entirely prepared for such a trek.

And although disappointed to have left the show prematurely, Ms Chand was proud of herself for “giving it a go”.

“I’m most proud that I completely went out of my comfort zone, because I’ve never been camping, never been on a multi hike – I’ve never done any of this stuff before.,” Ms Chand said.

“I’ve never even been thrown into a group of 14 strangers before, so it was not just a physical challenge, but also a social challenge.

“So, I’m quite proud of myself for being able to go through seven days of that and come out on the other end and be happy.”

Despite the New Zealand “wilderness” proving to be big change for her, she said her greatest challenge was the cameras.

“I’m not used to having to tell everything to a camera and having to do lots of interviews,” she said.

“I wasn’t very prepared for that sort of thing.

‘When I got asked to do this, I was mostly focused on the adventure… and completely forgot about all the other aspects of it, so then when I got there I was like ‘oh, that’s right – this is a reality TV show.”

Before she set off on her “once in a lifetime” journey, Ms Chand said she wanted to win so she could “give something back to mum because she’s always worked so hard for me.”

And although she didn’t win, she said she still made her mum proud.
