I’ve got some special personal news to share with you.
Alison and I have just made our marriage official, with a surprise backyard wedding for our closest family and friends.
We told guests it was our engagement party and careful planning from our celebrant and local high school teacher Michael Gardiner (his business is called Married by Michael) helped us pull it off.
At the start of the event, I took the microphone to welcome everyone to our home, while Ali stayed inside, pretending to still be getting ready.
I told guests it was wonderful to see them, as I had been so busy as Mayor.
In fact, I joked, if only we could get married right then and there, with our family by our side.
But was there a qualified celebrant amongst our guests?
After a few moments of silence, Michael’s hand shot up.
“I’ll do it,” he said. “I’m qualified!”
But would Ali be on board, I wondered aloud.
I pretended to text her and confirm that yes, she was up for it, and would change into her wedding dress.
Moments later my friends and I opened the shed to reveal our pre-decorated wedding arch, as well as seating, which we set up in the yard together.
Ali’s sister Megan runs photography service Images by Megan, so we were lucky to have her taking great pictures, while Lawrence Gratton played violin.
And our friend Kylie, who runs Ceres Quality Catering, served tasty food all evening.
It was the most amazing day, and I am so proud to call Ali my wife.
She’s my best friend, my confidante and my partner.
Through the good and the bad she has shown grace, loyalty, and resilience.
She reminds me to be calm and patient, encourages me, and adores the kids.
Ali is funny, beautiful, generous, charming and compassionate.
She sees the best in everyone.
Her love makes me a better person, and a better leader.
I couldn’t ask for a more wonderful woman to spend the rest of my life with.
Ali, I adore you and I love you.
